70 112 A THANGKA OF A FOUR-ARMED AVALOKITESHVARA - CHENRÉZIG - སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས་ TIBET OR TIBETO-CHINESE, 18TH TO 19TH CENTU- RY Distemper on cloth. Avalokiteshvara is identified by its four arms and is seated in padmasana on a lotus base, is encir- cled by a mandorla and is surrounded by various deities. All against a night blue background. Framed with an acrylic ‘glass’. Dimensions (the sole painted part): 56 x 41,5 cm Note: Avalokiteśvara is a Buddhist bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. He has 108 avatars, one notable avatar being Padmapā ṇ i, the one who holds the lotus (padma). € 800 - 1,500 113 A THANGKA OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI OR GAUTAMA BUDDHA TIBET, CHINA, TIBETO-CHINESE, 18TH TO 19TH CENTURY Distemper on cloth. Shakyamuni is depicted seated in pad- masana on a lotus base, he holds his right hand downward in the earth-touching gesture (bhumisparsha mudra) with which he calls the earth goddess to affirm that he is entitled to attain enlightenment following his triumph over Mara, the destroyer. He is encircled by a mandorla and surrounded by numerous deities. The tones are predominantly red, green and orange.
