Fine Asian Art | 28-29 & 30 June 2022 63 Additional information and photographs for all lots can be found at www.adams.ie 98 FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF JUAN CARLOS KATZENSTEIN (1925-2018): A PROMINENT ARGENTINIAN DIPLOMAT (BY REPUTE) A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF THE BUDDHA AMITĀYUS ALSO KNOWN AS AMITĀBHA CYCLICALLY DATED TO GĒNGYÍN YEAR 庚寅 CORRESPONDING TO 1770 TIBETO-CHINESE, QIANLONG MARK AND MAYBE OF THE PERIOD Finely cast seated in padmasana on a rectangular plinth, the hands held in dhyana mudra, wearing a simple robe draped over the left shoulder leaving the right exposed as well as the jeweled necklace, the face with a meditative expression beneath hair pulled up into an elaborate coiffure behind a five-leaf tiara, the front of the plinth with an inscription reading ‘大清乾隆庚寅年敬造 ’ (Dà qīng qiánlóng gēng yín nián jìngzào - lit. ‘Respectfully made in the gengyin year during the Qianlong period in the Great Qing dynasty’). H: 18,7 cm Weight: 842,5 grams Provenance: - a private collection; - Juan Carlos Katzenstein (1925-2018), an Argentinian Diplomat, who was an Ambassador in Beijing, China, from December 6, 1975 to January 2, 1978, and later to the Holy See (Vatican) and to the Sovereign Order of Malta from 1989 to 1991 (by repute). Notes: Amitābha is a celestial buddha according to the scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism. He is the principal Buddha in Pure Land Buddhism, a branch of East Asian Buddhism. In Vajrayana Buddhism, and is known for his longevity attribute, magnetizing Western attributes of discernment, pure perception and purification of the aggregates with a deep awareness of emptiness of all phenomena. The present figure belongs to a larger group of identical bronzes, most of which bear cyclical dates along the bottom of the rectangular frame of the throne, produced to commemorate birthday celebrations of the Emperor Qianlong and the Empress Dowager. € 3,000 - 5,000
