This horse is depicted rolling on its back. Its forelegs and hind legs are tucked underneath, and so are its head - tucked between its two forelegs - and its tail - tucked between its two hind legs. Detailed flowing hairwork to the mane and tail, rendered by incisions. A tiny hole has been drilled right below its chin for suspension purpose. L: 4,7 cm Weight: 37,3 grams Notes: 1. This charming piece is striking for its animated playful pose. Jade carvings of horses in reclining poses first appeared in the Jin (1115-1234) and Yuan dynasties (1279-1368), such as one in the British Museum, London, illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pl. 26:15, where the author notes that these carvings have been traditionally attributed to the Tang dynasty (618-907) despite the lack of similar excavated examples. 2. For the concept of a jade carving of a rolling or recumbent horse, please refer to the one sold at CHRISTIE’S Hong Kong, China, 2015-10-07, lot 3652. “卧马”玉雕 中国,清代或更早 € 4,000 - 6,000
