Fine Asian Art | 28-29 & 30 June 2022 197 Additional information and photographs for all lots can be found at www.adams.ie 432 A CARVED BOXWOOD NETSUKE OF A MAN HOLDING AN EGGPLANT POSSIBLY BY JOBUN 如文 JAPAN, LATE EDO PERIOD, 18TH TO 19TH CENTURY Of elongated shape, depicting a standing man wearing loose robes tied up with a belt hanging a tobako-ire (visible to the back), and grasping what seems to be an eggplant in his right hand, his face turned to the left. The back part is pierced with two holes (himotochi) for suspension and is signed ‘ 如文 ’ for Jobun. H: 9,5 cm Weight: 14 grams Note: A simple and delicate carving, a touching one, with an expressive smiling face, very- well rendered. The wood nicely patinated with a colour ranging from light brown to honey. A piece that might be by Jobun but that we would cautiously described as ‘attributed to’. € 3,000 - 5,000 433 A BOXWOOD ‘FROG AND LOTUS SEEDS’ NETSUKE JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD The wood with a nice light caramel patina. The netsuke is pierced with two himotoshi for hanging. It is carved as a frog on lotus seeds. H: 4 cm Weight: 14,8 grams € 100 - 200 434 A WOOD CARVING OKIMONO OF A MONKEY (SARU) BITING A PEACH JAPAN, MEIJI TO TAISHO PERIOD Naturalistically carved out of a single piece of wood as a playful seated monkey holding and biting a peach of longevity. H: 15,5 cm € 400 - 600 435 A DELICATE LACQUER ‘SAIKAN SANYŪ - THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER’ TEA-CADDY AND COVER, CHA-IRE 茶入 JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD, LATE 19TH CENTURY Of round globular shape, with a recessed top, where the removable lid fits. It is adorned with gilt-relief against a black ground with the bamboo, plum and pine also known as the ‘Three Friends of Winter’ or ‘Saikan Sanyū’. H: 6,3 cm € 300 - 500 436 A GILT-LACQUER FOUR-COMPARTMENT ‘LANDSCAPE’ INRO JAPAN, 19TH CENTURY It is finely lacquered with a landscape with a tilt pavilion and a bridge along a river. Together with a cotton thread, an ojime and a wooden net- suke of a karako. Sold together with a Japanese wooden box. H: 8 cm € 1,500 - 3,000 437 A LARGE GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER ‘PEACOCK - KUJAKU - 孔雀 ’ DOCUMENT OR PAPER BOX AND COVER, RYOSHIBAKO JAPAN, EDO PERIOD Of rectangular shape, with round corners. Adorned in different technique of lacquer against a black ground with a peacock amidst chrysanthemum flowers together with repeated heraldic crests also known as mon.
