Adorned in filigree and blue enamels with bats and Shou (longevity) characters as well as set with apple green jadeite jade cabochons. The clip inscribed with the mark ‘silver’. The box bears a mark: ‘Yamanaka Sterling 04518- 5’. L: 4,4 cm Gross weight: 15,2 grams Note: Yamanaka & Co was an Asian Art dealership with branch- es in New York (1895), Boston (1899) and London (1900). 玉石装饰银质火柴盒,山中商会 玉石部分:中国 火柴盒部分:可能为伦敦,英国 € 300 - 500 198 A PAIR OF SILVER ‘CRANES AND LOTUS FLOWERS’ CANDLE- STICK HOLDERS CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY Each candlestick is superbly modeled as a crane standing on a superb- ly reticulated wooden stand adorned with celestial clouds. They are naturalistically depicted, standing on tall legs detailed with cylindri- cal bands, with one leg slightly bent, and their long necks gracefully curved. Each crane further grasps a peach sprig in its long pointed beak, the stem forming a pricket candlestick. The bodies and feathers are intricately and realistically rendered. Affixed to wooden stands. H (the tallest together with its stand): 39,5 cm Total gross weight: 1029,2 grams Notes: 1. The crane (he - 鹤 ) is believed by the Chinese to live to a very old age and therefore is a symbol of longevity. The crane’s white feathers also represent old age. 2.
