118 JOHN HENRY CAMPBELL (1757-1828)

A View of the Shipyard at Ringsend

Watercolour, 30.5 x 44.5cm

Signed and dated 1814

€ 3,000 - 5,000

This is a unique collection of watercolours by Campbell, collected over a considerable period of time.

Campbell carried on the 18th Century Irish landscape tradition well into the 19th Century which gives

an honesty and clarity before the romantics turned Ireland into Tayto Park. He was trained in the Dublin

Society’s Schools and exhibited extensively from 1800. Although he also painted in oils, his reputation rests

with

“his pleasing and well painted”

watercolours.

His daughter Cecilia Margaret, who married the painter George Nairn, was a competent watercolourist and indeed many

of her works have been mistaken for her fathers.
