Liège became a notable centre for the manufacture of glass items. It is particularly associated with the compli-

cated and highly intricate manufacturer of ‘spun’ glass or ‘a traforato’ which name indicates that the origin of

this technique was Venice. Indeed the Venetians took drastic steps to prevent the spread of façon de Venice

to Northern Europe. A collection such as this is rare as the nature of the product being fragile and made for

everyday use meant that most of it has not survived.
