‘The Four Elements’, Cheltenham 1989 to 1992, FIRST

SIGNED LIMITED EDITION, 50/125 sets, The Friends of

the Cheltenham Festival of Literature 1989-1992, 1992.

A complete set of the four sets of broadsheets which

were issued annually from 1989 in conjunction with the

Cheltenham Festival of Literature, comprising sixteen

broadsheets loosely inserted in card folders with title

labels on the upper panels. Each folder contains four

broadsheets being poems by Seamus Heaney, Jennie

Joseph, Laurie Lee and Lawrence Sail. The poems are

on the theme of the four elements and there is one

poem on each element in every folder, the poets tak-

ing it in turns to write about the various elements. Each

broadsheet is one of 125 numbered copies on mould-

made paper signed by its respective author and printed

at /b The Whittington Press. The poems by Seamus He-

aney are: ‘The Fire Gaze’, ‘The Water Pause’, ‘The Earth

House’ and the ‘Sir Station’. Each year there was a dif-

ferent illustrator beginning with Hellmuth Weissenborn

and continuing with Gwenda Morgan, John O’Connor

and Miriam MacGregor. There is a wood engraving on

each broadsheet and a fifth one on the title label on

each folder. The title label wood engravings reflect all

four elements.
