was in response to a report of a SpeechbyO’Connell published in the ‘Pilot’ newspaper at the anti-ToryAssociation
meeting inwhichO’Connellmade reference toFinn: “Inow turn toCarlow, andaskwhywasnot that excellentman,
Mr. Vigors, returned ? Because thirty-five baseCatholics voted against him ... And thesemenpretend tobeCatho-
lics. One of these leaders savoured of Republicanism; and if I hadno other reason for disliking republicanism, this
fact alonewouldbe sufficient.Youroutrageousandhigh-flying republicans I could find fit tobe trusteduponpublic
questions ... Yes; therehe is, and I donot hesitate toname theworthygentleman ...whenMr. TomFinnvotes for the
no-popery candidate”. In responseFinn suggests that ifO’Connell hadnot readMachiavel theFlorentine, he should
have: “Fling dirt enough, some of it will sticky”. Adetailed and lengthy defence of his position follows inwhichhe
points out all O’Connell’s flaws in his political career: “You have established onemendicity asylum at Derrynane
Abbey, in theCounty of Kerry, and anothermendicity asylum atMerrion-square, in theCity of Dublin, ‘where fat
contented ignorants, brazen effrontery, and irreclaimable dullness may repose under the shade splendid beggary;
proving to the astonished cow-herd and turf-cutters of Caherciveen, as well as to the starvingweavers and ragged
scavengers ofDublin, thatwhile every trade andmanufacture in Ireland is on thewane,mendicancy-proud, puffed
up,well fedmendicancy flourishes in thedrawing-room, or lolls in thegilded chariot,without fearof diminutionor
