1 Samuel Palmer (1805-1881)

The Lonely Tower

Samuel Palmer played a major role as a writer and artist in the Romanticism move-

ment in mid-19th century Britain. His Arcadian images and pastoral landscapes would

later inspire artists such as Graham Sutherland and Eric Ravilious in establishing the

Neo-Romantic painting style of the 1940’s and 50’s.

Editions of this plate are housed in the Tate Britain and the British Museum collections.
