97 Works on Paper 268 A PASSPORT ISSUED TO NATHANIEL HONE BY THE FOREIGN OFFICE LONDON, dated April 4th 1881, the document is requested by Viscount George Granville Earl Granville and Baron Leveson, on Hone’s behalf stating ‘Request and require in the Name of Her Majesty, all those whom it may concern, to allow Nathaniel Hone (a British Subject) travelling the continent accompanied by his wife, to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford him every assistance and protection of which he may stand in need’. Signed by Nathaniel Hone and Viscount Granville After Hone’s seventeen years in France he returned to Ireland in 1872. Within a few months he married Magdalen Jameson of the wealthy, distilling family and they settled near Malahide. He continued to travel in this period, making several trips abroad to Greece, Asia Minor and Egypt. Granville George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville, (1815 - 1891), styled Lord Leveson until 1846, was a British Liberal statesman from the Leveson- Gower family. In a political career spanning over 50 years, he was appointed on three occa- sions Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
