The sitter in the present lot is thought to be a fellow student at the Westminster Technical Institute where Jellett
attended in 1917, and studied under Walter Sickert. She later wrote of her time at the Institute, ‘for the first time
drawing and composition came alive to me’. The studio background is similar to that in several other paintings
by the artist.
