18 MARION KING (1897-1963)

Marion King was a cartoonist, illustrator and painter on glass. She was born in Trim, Co. Meath but spent much of her early life with her

family in Leeds, England where she studied at Leeds College of Art. She returned to Ireland in 1922 and exhibited in several locations

around Dublin during her lifetime (1934 Angus Gallery, St Stephen’s Green; 1937 Academy of Christian Art, 42 Upper Mount Street Dub-

lin) but also lived for a time in Paris where in 1936 she exhibited at the Salon des Femmes Peintres and the Salon des Artistes Francais.

Marion King wrote and illustrated a number of children’s books with Irish texts and had a programme on Radio Eireann - ‘Drawing and

Painting with Marion King’ which began in 1943. Sean Bunny, her cartoon-and-story strip in the Irish Times began in 1953 and continued

until her death in 1963.
