Dorothy Therman , an American, first visited Tory in 1981 and became enraptured by the Island, its people and their stories which she started

recording from her first trip. They were stories of fairies, superstitions, fishing and great storms

that had effected the lives of the Islanders. She made friends with many of the islanders and also became close friends with fellow visitor and

part-time resident the artist Derek Hill. She was 71 before her book “Stories of Tory” was published and Derek Hill wrote the introduction and

also allowed one of his paintings be used on the front cover. Her papers and collection of stories are now housed in UCD and after her death

her family felt these works by Derek Hill should be returned to Ireland where they can be enjoyed by new appreciative owners.
