This is a sean-nós dancer dancing to the accompaniment of a traditional fiddler in the
open gaelic football pitch.
The artist’s daughter Laillí was at that Feis with her father in 1947. She remembers cycling
over the four miles to the pitch on a beautiful hot day. He sketched this scene while sit-
ting on a rock.Then he worked on the picture in the winter following. It remained in the
studio for a long timeThe sean-nós dancer has removed his cap as a mark of respect for the
viewers. We are grateful to Laillí for her help in cataloguing this picture.
