Mixed media, 67 x 46cm

A largely forgotten figure, Francis Rose was once championed by Gertrude Stein and
was a rising star of the 1920’s and 1930’s Paris art scene. He studied with Francis
Picabia and later worked as a set painter for Diaghilev’s Russian Ballets. He occasion-
ally collaborated with fellow Englishman, and his sometime lover, Christopher Wood.
Rose married the writer Dorothy Carrington in the 1940’s, however this was not to
last, and he spent the last years of his life living with the famous photographer Cecil
Beaton. His work can be seen in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and in the
Yale University collection.
