27 The Evolution of the Chronograph Few watchmaking complications have shaped horological history as profoundly as the chronograph. Conceived as a tool of precision, it became an enduring symbol of technical ingenuity and design mastery. Across decades, from the 1930s to the golden age of the 1960s, a handful of movements defined its legacy, many of which are represented in this sale. In the collection presented in this sale, the chronograph appears in its most accomplished forms. From the refined precision of early column-wheel calibres to the technical mastery of mid-century production. Rolex’s Antimagnetique models like the Ref. 3484 presented here, powered by a Valjoux-based calibre with column wheel construction, illustrate one of the the brand’s first fully realised chronographs, combining precision engineering and elegant design. Heuer’s Landeron 13 represents the reliability and industrial ingenuity that helped establish the chronograph as a practical instrument. One extraordinary example of the Landeron 13 in this auction comes accross a double signeddial byTiffanyNewYork, a rare testimony to the international reachof Swisswatchmaking in the 1940s. Universal Genève’s calibre 285, presented here in a uni-compax brought exceptional balance and sophistication, while the Zenith’s 146DP perfected the smooth operation of the column wheel; No chronograph anthology would be complete without the Omega calibre 321. With its copper finish, column wheel and lateral clutch, the 321 powered Seamaster and Speedmaster models alike. Its reliability and beauty were such that NASA selected it for the Apollo missions, forever linking it with mankind’s greatest adventure. At the summit stands Longines, whose 30CH refined the legendary flyback architecture, and whose 13ZN-12 Sommatore, featuring dual flyback and a central minute recorder, remains one of the most advanced and beau- tifully constructed chronograph movements ever produced. Both theses calibres are featured in the present sale. Together, these watches trace a heritage of technical achievement and aesthetic harmony, a living testament to the evolution of the chronograph.
