58 43 WILLIAM UNDERHILL (FL.1848-1870) An Ejected Family Oil on canvas 71 x 91.5cm Provenance: Purchased at the Irish Antiques Dealers Fair, Dublin; Private Collection, Ireland, thence by descent. According to Christopher Wood, ‘Dictionary of Victorian Painters’ (1971), Underhill was a London painter of genre, sporting subjects, coastal scenes and mythological subjects. Born at Birmingham, brother of F. C.Underhill. Exhibited from 1848-70 at the R A, British Institute and elsewhere, titles at the R A including ‘Irish Emigrants’ (1849), ‘Cupid and Psyche’ (1851), and ‘The Salmon Trap’ (1856). In 1859 the Art Journal reviewed ‘The Raft’ (at The Portland Gallery, a man helping a woman out of the sea), as “A daring essay, successful in many points”. Paintings by him are held in the collection of Birmingham and Wolverhampton art galleries. € 2,000 - 3,000
