Following several years successfully performing with the Celtic Ballet she decided to become an artist – a decision often linked to the influence of Morris’s husband, Scottish Colourist J.D. Fergusson. In 1958 she moved to Essex where she knew several artists, including William Crozier and Robert MacBryde were work- ing. However, in 1970 Douthwaite embarked on a more nomadic existence. Although much of her work explores issues surround- ing femininity and womanhood, Douthwaite did not self identify as a feminist. She was the recipient of various awards from the Scottish Arts Council. In 2005, following her death, the Scottish National Gal- lery in Edinburgh held a memorial exhibition. She has been notably compared to Amedeo Modigliani and Chaïm Soutine, the peintres maudits of early twentieth-century.
