LOTUS DREAM ON A JOURNEY A THOUSAND-YEAR ECHO OF ASIAN ART VIETNAM · CHINA · HIMALAYAS · INDIA · INDONESIA This auction brings together an exceptional selec- tion of 417 works of art from Vietnam, China, the Himalayas, India, and Indonesia, spanning from the Neolithic period to the 20th century. With a special emphasis on Southeast Asian art and private collec- tions, this sale highlights thediversity, richness, and historical depth of Asian cultures across time and geography. A major highlight is a group of three rare works by Ivan Sagita ( lot 413-415 ) , a prominent figure in Indo- nesian contemporary art, from the Irish collection of TomMcMunn. Born in Yogyakarta in 1957, Sagita is renowned for his symbolic, often surrealist style that reflects Indonesia’s unique socio-cultural and spiritual context. His role in the “Jogja surrealism” movement makes these works both visually com- pelling and culturally significant. Another cornerstone of the auction is the collec- tion of ancient Chinese jade from a distinguished Malaysian Chinese family of four generations, hon- oredwith the Tan Sri title (lot 108-155), featuring re- fined jade carvings that reflect the transmission and continuation of Chinese cultural traditions within Southeast Asia. These pieces not only embody the elegance of Chinese antiquity but also underscore its influence on the broader region. A newly added section in this season’s auction is dedicated to the historical confluence of East and West, focusingon18th–19th century trade centered around Guangzhou (Canton). This unit includes porcelain, paintings, and bronzes that capture the cross-cultural exchanges between China and Europe. Among them, an exceptionally rare 19th-century Chinese ormolu enamel musical and automaton clock (lot 164) stands out as a testament to the artistic fusion and technical innovation of the time. These works are more than decorative ob- jects—they are enduring symbols of howcommerce, at its best, can foster cultural dialogue and creative excellence. In the Himalayan art category, collectors and schol- ars will find an impressive selection of rare early Buddhist sculptures from India and Nepal, offering invaluable material for the study and appreciation of Buddhist iconography. These works represent both artistic achievement and deep spiritual herit- age. Chinese art remains a strong pillar of the sale. A particularly elegant Yongzheng blue-and-white jar with lotus scrolls (lot 199), exemplifies the refined design and technical excellence of Qing porcelain. In addition, the Chinese section is marked by medi- eval ceramics, early jade carvings, refined scholar’s objects, and archaic bronzes, all of which embody both artistic beauty and archaeological depth.
