128 | ADAM’S 373 A FINELY EMBROIDERED MAHAKALA SILK THANGKA 清代刺绣大黑天唐卡 Tibet-China, Qing Dynasty depicting the six-armed wrathful deity Mahākāla, in a vigor- ous, striding stance atop a blooming lotus pedestal upheld by four snow lion heads, each of his six arms wielding a powerful tantric implement, including a skull cup, flaying knife, trident, and axe—symbols of his protective function, adorned with a short dhoti, scarves, and jewellery, the face with bulging eyes and bared fangs, is framed by cascading golden hair bound with a crown, the central figure encircled by a retinue of Bud- dhas, bodhisattvas, and lineage masters, on a red background, mounted with silk brocade as a hanging scroll.
