Adam's FINE ASIAN ART November 18 2024

For this auction we have selected the theme ‘SUPREME GLORY’, we are turning the spotlight on Vietnamese art. Asian art is generally centred around Chinese and Japa- nese works, which can often result in Vietnamese works being overlooked. Vietnamese art has a rich history, spanning from ancient times with the creation of Dong Son bronze drums and Cham sculptures to the intricate woodblock prints and ceramics of later dynasties. Influenced by Chinese, French, and indigenous cultures, Vietnam’s art has evolved through periods of conflict and peace, reflecting the nation’s complex identity. Today, Vietnamese artists have gained international recognition, blending traditional techniques with modern expressions to create a vibrant and di- verse art scene. One remarkable highlight of this auction is the rareMinhMạng imperial (1791-1841) ru- by-inlaid and gold-mounted ceremonial sword, which showcases the brilliant achieve- ments of Vietnamese court art in the early 19th century - a pivotal moment in both Asian and European history. The blade’s masterful German craftsmanship combined with the high-level Vietnamese lacquerwork and jewellery-making techniques speaks to Vietnam’s ability to integrate and adapt, a trait that resonates today as the country navigates its way between the opposing forces of China and the West. Vietnam has emerged as a rising star on the international stage, and its art has become one of the most captivating focal points of Asian art over the past decade. In addition to Vietnamese artworks, this auction also features private collections from Ireland, France, Belgium, and Spain. Highlights include a collection of Ming and Qing jade pieces from Ireland, a collection of Japanese samurai artifacts from Southern France, and a selection of Japanese ukiyo-e prints from North-East France, all of which are deserving of attention. As we approach the end of 2024, the Adam’s Asian Department and all its members extend their heartfelt wishes for peace, health, and prosperity. With the dawn of 2025 on the horizon, we look forward to new opportunities, growth, and continued appre- ciation for the beauty and diversity of Asian art. May the coming year bring inspiration and success to all! Dr. Wei Wang SUPREME GLORY 無上榮耀
