283 The origins of Chinese ceramics can be traced back to the Shang Dynasty (2nd millenium BC), over time expanding and evolving into a diverse range of uten- sils used by both the upper classes and common people in their daily lives. The Song Dynasty’s ‘Five Great Kilns’ propelled ceramic aesthetics to the height of popularity. From the Yuan Dynasty onward, the ascent of blue and white porce- lain transformed the city of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi into the renowned “Porcelain Capital” of China. Throughout the Yuan, Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods, various styles emerged such as monochrome glaze, blue and white, polychrome, famille rose, kiln transformation, and light reduction colours, which have all enriched the nar- rative of Chinese ceramics. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Dehua porcelain from Fujian, known as “Blanc de Chine,” found its way to Europe via the Maritime Silk Road, leaving a lasting impact on various European countries. Blue and white porcelain, in particular, sparked imitations across Europe. Given that Europeans could not produce porcelain until over four centuries later, these objects were treasured and treated with profound respect. Chinese ceramics have played a significant role in the intersection of commerce and art throughout world history, fostering mutual learning and cooperation. The ceramic artworks featured in this auction are representative of this dynamic historical and cultural exchange. CHINESE PORCELAIN
