On moving to Paris he was apprenticed with Jean-François Oeben a supplier of furniture to Louis XV. At the time, in the 1750s, cabinetmaking was a very competitive field and to become a recognised maker, one had to engage in lengthy training, over- seen by guilds. A highly collaborative process, cabi- net making involved numerous different people of different skillsets. Risesener worked with extensive- ly with Étienne Martincour, a bronze worker and gilder throughout his career. Riesener was cabinet maker to the king for over a decade and his designs were in part influenced by the taste of the court and royal patrons. His Bureau du Roi, is one of his most famous commissions and seen as a masterpiece of French cabinetmaking in the 18th century. It had been started by Oeben prior to his death but was delivered by Riesener in 1769, with only his name appearing on it. Roll-top desks were a speciality of his workshop and although not invented as a form by Riesener, his master Oeben seems to have delivered one of the earliest exam- ples of its type. Riesener adapted the form of the cylinder top desk in a number of ways in order to diversify the designs, by using different marquetry decoration or mounts. In 1786, Marie-Antoinette ordered a cylinder desk from Riesener for her pri- vate apartments at the Château de Fontainebleau. A similar example can be found in the Wallace Col- lection, London (Cylinder Desk F277). € 5,000 - 8,000
