250 Country House Col lections 635 AN IRISH MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE CABINET, C.1740 the broken pediment centred with a standing eagle flanked by rosettes above twin mirror panel doors enclosing an interior fitted with pigeon holes, above two short drawers, on a knee- hole desk base with secretaire drawer and an arrangement of ten drawers with brass ‘tire and raised on bracket feet, having a handwritten paper label inscribed ‘The Lord Monreagle,(sic) c/o CIE, Dublin’. 103 x 57.5 x 243cm high Provenance: Collection of Lord Monteagle of Brandon. Mount Trenchard House, Foynes, Co Limerick. Sale, Mealy’s Castlecomer where purchased by the present owner. As this secretaire cabinet dates to the early George III peri- od, it predates by a couple of decades the building of Mount Trenchard House which was built in the late 1770s by the Rice family, major landowners in Co. Limerick. The family’s estate was greatly increased in 1785 following the marriage of Ste- phen Edward Rice to a daughter of the Spring family, another wealthy land owning family in the south-west of the country. The cabinet was presumably acquired sometime later by mem- bers of the Spring Rice family and sold at auction in the early 2000s. Descendants of this family were raised to the peerage as Barons Monteagle of Brandon in 1869. Note: This can be compared to the ‘Newbridge’ cabinet illus- trated in Glin & Peill, Irish Furniture € 20,000 - 25,000 634 ATTRIBUTED TO STEPHEN SLAUGHTER (1677- 1765) Portrait of a Lady, Isabella Maria Portis, Half Length, with Pearl Necklace Oil on canvas, within feigned oval, 63cm x 77cm Provenance : Milford House, Co.
