Sinmouth on the North Coast of Devonshire, signed lower right, 12.5 x 16.5cm Provenance: Caroline Hamilton (the beneficiary of the surviving Lady Sarah Ponsonby’s will) and by descent at Hamwood, Dunboyne. € 10,000 - 15,000 William Payne, 1760 - 1830 A native of Plymouth and a trained engineer his carefully constructed wa- tercolours of landscapes around Devon and Cornwall became very sought after and when he turned his attention to Wales he attracted the support of the Ladies of Llangollen. His distinctive technique and the use of pigment of his own invention ‘Payne’s Grey’ led to considerable success.
