229 Country House Collections|18 th & 19 th October 2021 605 IRISH SCHOOL (18TH CENTURY) Portrait of Archbishop John Linegar, 1751 Oil on canvas, 121 x 97cm John Linegar (c.1671 - 1757) From an old Dublin Family of English origin, Linegar was ordained in Lisbon at which place he remained until returning to Dublin in 1697. He served as a priest in St Michans Parish, opening a chapel on Liffey Street. He succeeded archbishop Luke Fagan in 1718. Against the background of the Penal Laws he struggled to impose discipline on a church that without authority was free-wheeling with individual suffragans resisting episcopal orders and who were prepared to use the Penal laws against their own archbishop. He managed to enlist the support of Rome and his ‘Officia propria sanctorum Hiberniae’ published in Dublin in 1751 confirmed his stamp on the administration if the archdiocese. 1751 is also the year given as the date of this portrait which is a digni- fied old man satisfied that he has done his duty. € 6,000 - 8,000
