170 Country House Col lections Day II LIVE AUCTION: Tuesday 13 th October 2020 starting at 11am 531 AN IRISH MAHOGANY DECANTER STAND, mid 18th century, the bold frieze in deep relief centred by shells, against a pounced ground, on acanthus scroll capped cabriole legs with double claw feet, later adapted to serve as a jardinière. 75 x 45 x 49cm (high in the stand) € 5,000 - 8,000 Provenance: Hamwood House, Dunboyne, Co. Meath See note lot 484 These moveable containers were brought to perfection in Irish Furniture, no doubt in response to the importance given over to eating and drinking that was noted by so many contemporary visitors. This one with its confident deep carved scrolling is earlier than the ones usually met with such as illustrated in Glin & Peill ‘Irish Furniture’ [2007] p.246 and another recently dis- posed of from the Howth Castle collection. When their usefulness declined they were often altered as stools or, as in this case, to jardinières. Day II LIVE AUCTION at 26 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2: Tuesday 19 th October 2021 starting at 11am
