95 Country House Collections|12 th & 13 th October 2020 313 A 19TH CENTURY CORK CITY HANDPAINTED DINNER PLATE SIGNED BY CR PAIN, the central reserve painted with the Cork Coat of Arms and it’s Lat- in motto ‘Statio bene fida carinis’ translated as ‘A safe harbour for ships’, enclosed within the Cork Lord Mayors Great Chain which was presented by Queen Elizabeth in 1571 to Mayor of Cork Maguire Roche, the rim decorated with symbols including the Cap of Main- tenance signifying the continuity of the Mayor and the Corporation; the Dart, which was used in an annual ceremony whereby the May- or, as Admiral of the Port defined the jurisdiction of Cork Harbour by throwing it off Blackrock Castle; the Mace and Sword are incor - porated with the Dart; the Portcullis at the bottom was used to pre- vent ships entering the channel when the city was walled. Thought to have been commissioned for the Lord Mayor of Cork’s Old Mansion House (now the Mercy Hospital) which was built in 1767.
