Portuguese colonisation in India was first and foremost for an increase in power through trade and their domination of cer- tain routes. However, from the sixteenth century onwards, the arrival of Christian settlers and missionaries, added another dimension to the colonial expansion. The four main missionary Orders, the Augus- tinians, Jesuits, Dominicans and Francis- cans, built churches and aimed to con- vert the native populace to Christianity. Religious imagery in ivory assisted in the presentation of Christian imag- ery, as well as being exported back to churches, convents and private collectors in Europe. 569 A HANDSOME CUT-GLASS CLARET JUG, PROBABLY IRISH, C. 1800, the facetted neck above a deep bowl of flat-cut diamonds, and a small fluted swaggered band, the stepped base on a sloping lobed foot undercut with a diamond. 17 cm high € 1,000 - 1,500 570 A MAGNIFICENT PAIR OF GEORGE II CUT-GLASS URNS AND COVERS, the lids with strigal fluted knops, above a band of diamonds and convex cut rim, the body with a deep matching band of diamonds above strigal fluting, the stepped facetted stem on star-undercut lobed bases. 63 cm high € 3,000 - 5,000 572 A BRONZED CLASSICAL FIGURE OF A BELLONA, ROMAN GODDESS OF WAR. 116cm high € 1,500 - 2,000
