Tuesday 15 th October 345 557 A VENEERED MAHOGANY CARTON WRITING TABLE, 18TH CENTURY of rectangular form, with ormolu mounts, the top inset with leather scriver, above three frieze drawers to one side and three faux drawers to the other, the two short drawers stamped ‘CARTON’ and ‘ LADY KILDARE ’ to the inside rims, the drawers with ornate ormolu handles and back plates, raised on square tapered legs and brass castors. 99cm x 52cm x 69cm high € 3,000 - 5,000 The inscription indicates that this piece came from a ladies study or bedroom at Carton. ‘Lady Kildare’ either means Emily, thus styled until her husband was created Duke of Leinster in 1766, or, if later, the wife of the eldest son. The former is more likely. The contents of Carton were dispersed in a series of sales in the 20th Century.
