The weekly Czech magazine was a richly illustrated mixture of entertaining and enlight- ening stories on many subjects. It was first briefly published in 1864-1865 by Karl Seyfried and edited by Vítězslav Hálek (1835-1874), a Czech poet, writer, journalist, dramatist, and theatre critic. It was revived in 1884 as a weekly published by Jan Otta and ran until 1929. € 250 - 350 96 PAUL CRESPIN (BELGIAN 1859 - 1944) & LES MAITRES DE L’AFFICHE Paul Hankar, Architect Lithograph, 40 x 29cm Pl. 91 (1897) Crespin’s famous poster of his good friend the Art Nouveau architect Paul Hanker (1859-1901) was acclaimed in 1897 by the French art critic and poster artist Alexandre Demeure de Beaumont to be ‘perfect’ and ‘among the best, if not the best of Crespin. A watercolour of the preparatory work is held in the Musee d’Ixelles in Brussels. In the work Hanker is shown plying his craft in his studio at 63 rue de Facqz, fully absorbed in the act of creating, he stands in a relaxed pose, a curl of smoke rising from his cigarette. His surrounded by the tools of his profes- sion, T-squares, ruler, which become decorative framing elements within the work. The use of honeycomb pattern on the red wall painted with yellow bees alludes potential to Hankar’s prodigious output in his career. € 400 - 600
