He attended evening classes at the Newcastle School of Arts under William Bell Scott. During this time he began to develop quite a reputation locally as a painter of hors- es and dogs, and he received some commissions to por- tray family pets. He continued to paint canine portraits throughout his life. He was however particularly drawn to historical and battle scenes and achieved a level of acclaim, producing both paintings and illustrations of military events of the late Victorian era. He debuted at the Royal Academy in 1870, and his first painting with a military theme, Exercis- ing Artillery Horses on a Frosty Morning, appeared three years later. Charlton and his wife Kate Vaughan lost two sons on the Western Front in June 1916, within a week of one an- other, the shock of which had a damaging effect on his health. He died in November 1917 after a short illness. € 2,000 - 4,000
