A CIRCULAR MAHOGANY DINING OR CENTRE
TABLE, C.1825, by Gillingtons, the hinged
top with reeded edge, on a ringed pillar
and hipped reeded lotus-capped legs.137cm
diameter, stamped Gillingtons 4443
Gillingtons, along with Mack, Williams and Gibton were among
Dublin’s most eminent firms of the furniture makers during
the first half of the 19th Century. John Gillington is recorded
at various addresses in the Dublin trade directories between
1794 and 1810. From 1810 John worked in partnership with
his two sons, George and Samuel, trading under the name of
John Gillington and Sons. With their father’s departure in 1814,
George and Samuel moved to 180 Abbey Street where they
traded as upholders and auctioneers until 1820. From 1820 until
1838 George Gillington apparently continued in business alone,
recorded in the trade directories at addresses in both Abbey Street
and College Green.
Among the recorded examples of Gillingtons’ work is a set
of fourteen mahogany Klismos chairs believed to have been
commissioned by Euseby Cleaver, Archbishop of Dublin, for
his house in St Stephen’s Green (cf. Christie’s, London 7th July
1994, lot 40). Other pieces associated with this firm were sold
Christie’s, London, 13th October 1988, lot 74, and Sotheby’s,
London, 18th November 1994, lot 172
