James Hicks opened his workshop in 1894. Early furniture style reflected 18
th
century Palladian style featuring
shells, laurel swags and large cabriole legs. Later works becomemore slender and classical in form. A consistent
vein that ran through the works producedwas quality Chippendale, Adams and Sheraton inspired styles of fur-
niture.The craftsmanshipwas recognised by several awards, one of whichwas theAonachTailteann in 1928; and
various famous commissions.The same year as the deathof JamesHicks, the President andChairmanof theNew
YorkWorldTrade Fair in 1939 sent a certificate to theHick’s firm conveying their appreciation of the substantial
contributionmadeby theHick’s exhibit,which they felt led to the success of the fair.
