88 540 ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM BROCAS, RHA (C. 1794-1868) Posthumous portrait of David Cairnes (1645-1722), small full-length, standing, in uniform, on the battlements of Lon- donderry, before a cannon oil on canvas 108 x 72 cm with identifying inscriptions and dated ‘1688’ Provenance: The Barons Rossmore, Rossmore Castle, Co. Monaghan, moved to Camla Vale, Co. Monaghan in the 1940s, thence by descent David Cairnes (1645-1722) was actively involved in the Siege of Derry. It was a pivotal event in the Williamite War. Cairnes argued for the city to be defended against James II, who ad- vanced with the Jacobite forces.
