ADAM'S Country House Collections Day II - 28th April 2026
112 588 ATTRIBUTED TO NICOLAS RÉGNIER AND STUDIO (1591- 1667) Allegory of Fortitude Oil on canvas, 143 x 114cm Provenance: with Lasson Gallery, London; sale, Sotheby’s, London, 10 December 1986, lot 32; Private collection, Ireland This elegant portrait closely resembles Réginer’s full-length Allegory of Fortitude in Ca’ Rezzonico, Venice. Réginer painted a series of allegories, which are known as Gener- osity, Wisdom, Fortitude and a depiction of Flora. It has been suggested that the sitter in this portrait could possibly be portrayed as Circe. There are several attributes that can be associated with Circe such as the navigator’s handbook, the cup of poison held high and the boar’s head by her side. An almost identical version that illustrates the addition of a wand, was in the collection of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, Haigh Hall, Lancashire. € 15,000 - 20,000
