Williams carried out a number of missionary and teaching projects in China throughout his twenties and was fluent in Chinese. In 1833 Williams travelled to China with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to work with the Canton mission press. During his time in China, Williams wrote the ‘An English and Chinese Vocabulary in Court Dialect’ published in 1844. In 1855, Williams was appointed Secretary of the United States Legation to China, and during this time he wrote ‘A Tonic Dictionary Of The Chinese Language In The Canton Dialect’ ( 英華 分韻撮要 ) which was published in 1856. Upon his return to the United States in 1877, Wells was appointed as the first Professor of Chinese lan - guage and literature in the United States at Yale University. € 700 - 1,000
