The Peter Linden Oriental Rug Collection 12th March 2025

3 Per Lindfors (aka Peter Linden) grew up in Sweden immersed in Persian carpets and rugs so it was no surprise that he ended up making them his life’s work. His father was a keen collector and developed strong friendships with numerous significant carpet and rug dealers in Stockholm. As a teen Per started buying and selling and soon caught the rug dealing bug. Later in Ireland Per developed, almost single-handedly, themarket for fine antique oriental carpets through his gallery in Black- rock, Peter Linden Oriental Carpets and became the face of this niche area of the antiques trade in this country. Sadly Per died last year and now the last of his stock of oriental carpets and rugs together with some of his own personal collec- tion are to be sold along with his library of reference books, auction catalogues and a long run of the specialist magazine HALI. Back in 2006, Per decided to downsize his Blackrock gallery and concentrate on antique fairs and his private clients. This necessitated the disposal of a great deal of his stock at the time and he entrusted the sale to us, re- sulting in a spectacularly successful auction. Since then, Per enjoyed a slightly more relaxed lifestyle, although he was never short of projects and hobbies in fairness. Per’s observations in the introduction to the 2006 Ad- am’s catalogue are actually as true today as they were then and are worth repeating – “Rather than dispersing the stock at international auction, I have decided to of- fer the entire collection here in Ireland where most of my loyal and enthusiastic customers are based. This is a wonderful selection of antique and semi-antique wo- ven treasures, including some superb and rare items at the very top range of their groups. Every single item has been carefully chosen and vetted, washed and (if nec- essary) lovingly restored. An auction of this calibre will most definitely not be seen again in Ireland and will give the public the opportunity to view and acquire very spe- cial and fine examples of one of the oldest, greatest and most undervalued art forms.” While Per, back almost twenty years ago, didn’t expect to have another sale dedicated to his collection, it’s not altogether surprising as he couldn’t resist the opportunity to purchase fine pieces wherever and whenever he could find them. Per and I discussed ‘The Peter Linden Sale - Part Two’ over the course of the last couple of years but neither of us expected that we would be doing it without him. It’s an honour to be involved in this final dispersal of his collection which also includes numerous pieces which he and Celine enjoyed in their home for many years. This truly, and sadly, is the final Peter Linden sale. James O’Halloran March 2025 Wednesday 12th March, 2025 THE PETER LINDEN ORIENTAL CARPET COLLECTION
