Saunier trained and worked under his father at the Saunier atelier in the Faubourg Saint-An- toine. In 1752, he registered his maître ébéniste, before taking over the atelier from his father in 1765. Saunier was commissioned by many notable private clients as well as the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre and Martin-Eloi Lignereux. Daguerre was the leading Parisi- an dealer of the time, supplying furniture to the French royal family and many English collectors. Saunier’s reg- ular use of carefully selected veneers, marquetry, ge- ometric patterns, high quality ormolu mounts and dec- orative motifs distinguish his work as exemplificatory of neoclassical craftsmanship, though his oeuvre demon- strates his engagement with, and expertise in, a num- ber of other styles throughout his career, including the Louis XVI, Transitional, and Directoire Styles.
