Internally very fine 47 x 30cm Pierre (Pieter) Mortier was a Dutch mapmaker, engraver and pub- lisher of books. He travelled to Paris in 1681-85 to train in cartog- raphy before returning to Amsterdam and setting up his business. He was located in Middeldam initially before moving to Vijgendam. He published maps and atlases by French cartographers for the Dutch market. The L’Histoire du Vieux et Nouveau Testament, or Mortier’s Bible as it has become known as, is an illustrated bible, with engravings by well-known artists of the period including Bernard Picart and Jan Luyken. The text is written by David Martin, a French theologi- an living in Holland. As a monumental work it places the impor- tance of the written word and the image on par with each other, with engraved plates on almost every page accompanying the text. This copy is particularly rare as it contains the Apocalypse plate in the second volume before it was damaged by a printing mishap in other versions. After his death in 1711 his business was carried on by his widow until 1719 and then taken over by his son Cornelius who later part- nered with Johannes Covens I and went on to establish the largest cartographic publishing company in the 18th century, Covens and Mortier. € 2,000 - 3,000
