38 A PAIR OF SILVER ‘CRANES AND LOTUS FLOWERS’ CANDLESTICK HOLDERS CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY Each candlestick is superbly modeled as a crane standing on a superbly reticulated wooden stand adorned with celes- tial clouds. They are naturalistically detailed, standing on tall legs detailed with cylindrical bands, with one leg slightly bent, and their long necks gracefully curved. Each crane further grasps a peach sprig in its long pointed beak, the stem forming a pricket candlestick. The bodies and feathers are intricately and realistically rendered. Affixed to wooden stands. H (the tallest together with its stand): 39,5 cm Total gross weight: 1029,2 grams Notes: 1. The crane (he - 鹤 ) is believed by the Chinese to live to a very old age and therefore is a symbol of longevity. The crane’s white feathers also represent old age. 2. For the concept of silver cranes forming candlesticks, see a magnificent pair dated by inscription to the Tongzhi period, sold at CHRISTIE’S Hong Kong, China, 2016-06-01, lot 3235. €3,000 - €5,000
