Adam's FINE ASIAN ART 28th,29th,30th Preview June 2022
20 A WHITE JADE CARVING OF A LOTUS ROOT AND BIRD CHINA, QING DYNASTY The stone, of fine white color highlighted with added russet, is naturalistically carved as a lotus root or rhizome to each side and further depicted with a bird. L: 7,5 cm Weight: 117,8 grams Notes: 1. A seemingly rare and original depiction of the subject. Because the Buddha is often depicted as seated atop a lotus, the lotus is considered a sacred Buddhist symbol (one of Eight Auspicious Symbols) representing purity and detachment from worldly cares. Additionally, the Chinese word for lotus is ‘lianhua’ ( 莲花 ) or ‘hehua’ ( 荷花 ) and ‘liam’ is also the pronunciation of the words for continuous ( 连 ) and harmony ( 和 ). As a result, the lotus has the hidden meaning of ‘continuous harmony’. 2. A fine white jade stone blushed throughout with russet highlights. 3.
