124 232 *A YIXING ZISHA TERRACOTTA ‘GONG CHUN - 龔春 ’ TEAPOT AND COVER POSSIBLY BY HUANG YULIN (CIRCA 1843-1914) CHINA, 20TH CENTURY Naturalistically potted in the form of a tree-knurl, the cover surmounted by a stem knob, the handle in the form of a curved stem, the base with an impressed seal Huang Wanglin, artist name of Huang Yulin, two further impressed seal marks to the interior of the cover. H: 9,5 cm Notes: 1. Huang Yulin, a native of Yixing, received training from the renowned Qing dy- nasty Yixing artist Shao Xiangpu. Huang’s superb skills of clay kneading and tea- pot making are often demonstrated on teapots in various forms. Gu Jingzhou had also highly admired Huang’s craftsmanship and commended him as a “versatile potter” especially for making teapots of compressed globular and square forms. 2. The design of this teapot is based on one said to have been made by Gong Chun, a Yixing potter from the Zhengde period of the Ming dynasty. Gong Chun’s teapot was so admired that this style, with the roughly textured surface resembling tree bark, came to be named after him. This style continued to be copied into the 19th century. 3. Compare with a related teapot dated to the late 19th century from the Pal- ace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in ‘Zisha Wares in the Palace Museum’, Bei- jing, p. 147, pl. 82. Also compare with a Gongchun style teapot by Huang Yulin sold as part of a lot at BONHAM’S Hong Kong, China, 2013-05-26, lot 427, for HK$680,000. 宜兴紫砂供春壶,可能为黄玉林作(约 1843-1914 ) 中国, 20 世纪 € 400 - 600 233 A YIXING ZISHA ‘SACRED PEAKS’ BRUSH-REST CHINA, LATE QING DYNASTY, LATE 19TH CENTURY Made of a terracotta of brown tones. It has a flat base and is finely mod- eled as sacred peaks or mountains. The back bears an impressed mark. H: 5,5 cm - L: 21,4 cm Weight: 178,7 grams Note: Mountains (shan - 山 ) are the places closest to the gods and because of their expanse and heights convey the meaning of limitless. 宜兴紫砂笔架 中国,晚清, 19 世纪晚期 € 300 - 500 231 *A TIBETAN STYLE YIXING ZISHA TERRACOTTA TEAPOT AND COVER POSSIBLY BY XU HANTANG 徐汉棠 (1932-) CHINA, 20TH CENTURY Potted after a Tibetan silver teapot model, with a short ring foot, a quatrefoil body, a waisted cylindrical neck and a dome- shaped lid. The handle, shaped as a bow, emanates from the mouth of a mythical beast. So is the spout. The lid is topped by a qilin or Chinese unicorn knob. The base with an impressed seal Xu Hantang, two further impressed seal marks to the inner part of the cover.
