The out- er part of the foot is finely painted in light blue enamels with a frieze of dots surmounting a frieze of key-frets whilst the neck is adorned with a frieze of rui surmounting a frieze of hanging garlands. The body is finely painted in famille rose enamels with a continuous scene, a mountain landscape planted with pine and willow trees where there is a warrior standing next to a white horse in front of a seated lady with a happy baby boy. The base is inscribed in iron red with an apocryphal four-character mark of Emperor Qianlong in kaishu within a double square. H: 24,5 cm Notes: 1. The quality of the enamel painting is exquisite. It possibly depicts two lovers meeting, one being a man together with his white horse, one being a woman holding a small boy or baby. The fine motif has been painted as a single continuous scene, all around the vase. 2. This painted subject may be have been taken from the ‘Romance of the Western Chamber’ ( 西廂記 ), i.e. the most famous Chinese dramatic works. It was written by the Yuan dynasty playwright Wang Shifu ( 王實甫 ), and set during the Tang dynasty. Known as ‘China’s most popular love comedy’, it is the story of a young couple con- summating their love without parental approval. 粉彩玫瑰瓷灯笼形花瓶 中国 € 2,000 - 4,000
