Kathleen Fox was brought up in an Anglo-Irish family on the outskirts of Dublin and studied at
the Metropolitan School of Art, attracting the attention of William Orpen, whose assistant she
eventually became. She first exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1911 before leaving
to paint in Paris and Bruges, returning to Dublin in 1916. She moved to Nice at the end of the
1910s but continued to exhibit in London and Dublin as well as France, before returning to
Dublin again in the mid 1920s. She was a highly successful portraitist in Ireland and England and
well regarded for her flower studies of the 1940s and 50s.
