48 407 *A SWORD PRESUMABLY FOR THE BOY’S FESTIVAL, TACHI Japan, 20th century Mostly a “decorative” weapon, probably meant as a gift for the Boy’s Festival also known as Tan- go-no-sekk u. The blade is made of chromed iron. The mount is like that of a tachi and of itomaki no tachi type. The saya (scabbard) is made up of nashiji lacquered wood. The mounts of gilt copper. The tsuba presumably of horn. The grasp all covered in same and enhanced with two dragon-shaped menuki. Offered at auction with its stand also referred to as tachikake.
