The clip for the shinobi no o is of mitsu tsuke type (a clip with three rings). The hodate is also made of wrought iron. It is worked in re- poussé (uchidashi). It has two otayori no kugi (two pegs to attach the cord). An asa nagashi no ana (sweat running hole) is below the chin. The inner part is in aka urushi (all covered with red lacquer) and bears a yodareka- ke of meguri wa type. The helmet is enhanced with an oni (devil / evil) maedate (frontal ornament) dated to the Meiji period. € 8,000 - 12,000 362 .A PEACH SHAPED SAMURAI HEL- MET, MOMONARI KABUTO Japan, Edo period, 18th century A lacquered wrought iron six plates kabuto, two of them adorned with an inome (a heart-shaped ornament), with a koshimaki enhanced with a horseshoe-shaped mabezashi (koma no tsuma, visor) on which is affixed an orikugi (a L-shaped fixation for the maedate). A hineno shikoro (neck pro- tection) is affixed to the koshimaki. It is made up of five lacquered wrought itamono iron (plain iron) plates laced in sugake (by pair, with a space) kon ito odoshi (with a night blue cord). Its hachi tsuke no ita (the first plaque affixed to the koshimaki) bears two 363 .A SAMURAI HELMET TOGETH- ER WITH A MASK, KABUTO AND MEMPO Japan, Edo period, 18th century 1. Description of the helmet (kabuto): Made up of six natural wrought iron plates in the manner of Muneyasu of the Myochin School, with a five-level tehen kanamono. The ko manju shikoro (neck protection) made up of five lac- quered wrought itamon iron (plain iron) plates laced in sugake kon ito odoshi. The ishinui no ita (the last plate of the shikoro) is all covered by a strip in iro kawa (a leather strip stained by using a stencil) and so are the fukigaeshi which bear the family crest of clan Kakega- wa of Suruga province. The shikoro is entirely gold-lacquered to its inner part. The hachi with shiten no byo (the tip which is above the hibiki no aba, i.e. the small holes wherein pass the braid). The mabezashi (visor) of medieval type is of Nobu style. It is centered by an oharaidate (the support for the maedate) of kadome type and in the style of yoshi ryu. The inner par with its ukebari (the fabric cap which maintains the helmet on the head). The shinobi no o (helmet cord) with three soft ties of mitsu tsuke type. The helmet is enhanced with a chrysanthemum-shaped maedate (frontal or- nament) dated to the Edo period and mumeï (unsigned). 2. Description of the mask (mempo): A wrought natural iron mask of ryubu type (martial type) with a mustache. It has two otayori no kugi (pegs beneath the chin) which maintain the cord to the kabuto.
