73 The History Sale 124 A SET OF MEDALS AWARDED TO PATRICK CONNELLY, comprising 1916 Easter Rising medal, the 1921War of Independence medal with “Comrac” bar, ribbon and clasp bar and the 1971War of Independence survivors medal with ribbon and clasp bar Patrick Connolly was a farmer fromTysaxon,Athenry, Galway who was born in 1888. His exact role and details of service during the Rebellion are not clear howev- er it is known that he was imprisoned in Richmond Barracks at the end of the Rising and on 19 May was sent toWoking Detention Barracks. He died in January 1978. € 1,000 - 1,500 125 TERENCE MACSWINEY (1879-1920) Munster & Lenister Leinster Bank paid cheque for £5 signed byTerence MacSwiney in Irish ‘Toirbhealbhach mac Suibhne’ to Rev Mother and Brother Seamus Hone, and dated at Cork 21.V.20, with blue embossed 2d. cheque duty stamp. Terence James MacSwiney , 28 March 1879 - 25 October, was a politician, play- wright and author. During theWar of Independence 1920 he was elected as Lord Mayor of Cork. He was arrested by the British on charges of sedition and imprisoned in Brixton Prison in England. He went on hunger strike while incarcerated and died, 74 days later on October 1920. His protest brought him and the Irish struggle for independence to international attention. € 300 - 500
