Galway Watercolour, one inscribed in pencil, “Headford Castle, Co. Galway, Ireland Richard St George Esq.” One sheet watermarked 1828, 146 x 228mm Richard J St George (1789 - 1857) extolled by Dutton in his Survey of the County of Galway for his ‘energy and taste’ in reviving his estate and the town of Headford. His father Richard Mansergh added the name St George on inheriting Headford in 1775.This Mansergh St George, a solider in the American wars; during his absence the estate and house was reported to have been wasted by “outlaws and vagrants”. On return in 1790 he set about reform but was killed in the 1798 rebellion. He is best known for his full-length portrait by Hugh Douglas Hamilton in the National Gallery, mourning at the tomb of his wife. His son Richard, completed these improvements and embellished the old castle of the St Georges.The present lot is a valuable documentation of his works. € 600 - 1,000
